Education

Wilhelms Universitaet, Bonn, Germany, Dr.med. (MD), 1972

Research Interests

  • Pathophysiology, genetics and epigenetics of MDS (role of transcription factors in regulation)
  • Inflammatory responses and GVHD (effects of alpha1 anti-trypsin [AAT])
  • Separation of GVHD and GVL effects by AAT
  • Iron and allogeneic responses (in vitro, in vivo)

Clinical Interest or Expertise

  • Diagnosis and treatment (transplant, non-transplant) of Aplastic anemia, Myelodysplastic syndromes, Myeloproliferative neoplasms
  • Treosulfan-based conditioning for transplantation
  • Selection of patients for transplantation ( ethics – economics – issues of futility)

Current Studies

  • Phase II randomized trial (Flu+ Treo vs Flu+ Treo +TBI) for conditioning of patients with MDS for transplantation
  • Treatment of steroid–refractory GVHD with alpha 1 anti-trypsin
  • High intensity vs reduced intensity conditioning for patients with MDS or AML (BMT CTN)
  • Comprehensive trial of transplantation for myeloproliferative neoplasms in the age of JAK2 inhibitors.
